Wednesday, February 1, 2023, the LIONS Club 2022-2023 public speaking competition was held in the gilded halls of the Hôtel de Bordeaux in Aurillac. Topic: «Altruism is reasonable selfishness» by Rémy de Gourmont. The event was supported by the Point-Virgule bookstore, which graciously offered books, and by the catering department of the Raymond-Cortat high school, which equally graciously offered appetizers... Participants included students from the IUT of Biological Engineering, the Emile-Duclaux and Jean-Monnet high schools, and, of course, Saint-Géraud.

Our champions: Merlynn Chahinez Kalkoul and Nans Desfour proudly carried the high school's banner. Proudly is the word, as, when introducing themselves, they loudly declared that one only needed to admire their look to understand they came from Saint-Géraud, which, as everyone knows, is an art and communication high school.

Merlynn, the first of the eight candidates to perform, kicked things off. She electrified the room with her energy and enthusiasm, linking altruism to the concept of pleasure and citing both Josephine Baker and Doctor Schweitzer.

Nans, who was in fifth place, based his reflection on altruism and selfishness, recalling a painful childhood memory: «the Dragibus tragedy,» where he was forced to share a bag of candy with a monster (meaning his sister). However, he concluded by praising the merits of altruism, now that he had reached maturity, calling for help for all the children, refugees, and miserable people in the world... and to buy a bag of candy to share with everyone.

While the jury deliberated, all the candidates came to the microphone to talk about themselves and their future projects. Unanimously, they declared themselves lazy... Nans, the most competent on the subject, impressed the audience by explaining that he had experienced all forms of laziness... Merlynn, a worthy student of Saint-Géraud, declared that she wanted to change the world through art, «which really needs it.».

Although our candidates had to bow to Pauline and Louise from Emile-Duclaux High School, who received the first and second prizes, Nans and Merlynn brilliantly secured the third and fourth, and declared themselves delighted with the experience, dreaming of doing it again or participating in other competitions. Then, the awards ceremony took place, attended by Mr. Laurent, our principal, and the final photo for the press. Then the evening ended: the audience could congratulate the candidates and chat with them, while enjoying more earthly pleasures: the famous petit fours… Until the next competition.
