Creation of a poster and two smaller posters for the show «Angela Davis, an American Story» by Cie l’Héliotrope.

The partnership we maintain with the Municipal Theatre of Aurillac leads us to diversify our fields of action: between two rock concerts at La Coopérative de Mai (Clermont-Ferrand) or at Le Sismographe (closer to home), we change gears this Thursday, November 30th, by going to see actors on stage.

A comedian, in this instance, alone on stage with a sampler and a screen for a show dedicated to Angela Davis. In the lead-up, Literature and Applied Arts teachers worked with students around the character, an American icon of the fight against racism (among other more relevant than ever struggles).

The project

44 students from the 1st year of the Bac Pro Visual Communication Multi-Media program were tasked with creating a custom poster for the play «Angela Davis, an American History» by the company L'Héliotrope. The objective was to reflect, through imagery and lettering, the heroic character and unwavering determination of Angela Davis, a civil rights activist, Black Panther member, feminist, and Doctor of Philosophy.

Pictorial references given to students images created in the 1960s by Sister Corita Kent, nicknamed «the pop nun» (!), an American nun who expressed her civic engagement through screen printing, in touch with the social movements of her time.

Process implemented

The work sessions were structured around the following elements:

  • a series of short documentaries about Sister Corita Kent and Angela Davis
  • A mood board gathering a selection of screen prints by Sister Corita Kent
  • a portrait gallery of Angela Davis
  • Reminder of the technical constraints related to the screen printing process

A superb result

Among all the projects submitted by the students, the following creations have been selected:

  • A poster 35 x 50 cm, 3-color screen print, edition of 80 copies (project selected: Rémi Lietaer)
  • Two small posters, 25 x 35 cm, two-color screen prints, edition of 30 copies each (selected projects: Enzo Couderc and Mathis Bernagou)

The screen printing was done live at the Théâtre d’Aurillac on Thursday, November 30th, just before the show.
