Peter Doherty Factory

Twenty years of partnership between Lycée Saint-Géraud and the Coopérative de Mai in Clermont-Ferrand, that's something to celebrate!

Peter Doherty et les sérigraphies du lycée Saint-Géraud
Peter Doherty proudly displays the posters created by students from Saint-Géraud High School.

Initiated in 2003 with a major project centered around Bashung, who was then in residence in the 6.3 district, this wonderful graphic and musical adventure involved the students of Vocational Baccalaureate in Visual Communication cross paths with Jane Birkin, Etienne Daho, Daniel Darc, Dominique A, Philippe Katerine, Jon Spencer, Catherine Ringer, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Miossec, Patti Smith and quite a few others…

After the psychedelic British band Temples opened the 2023-24 season, we had a rendezvous with nothing less than an English rock icon on Sunday, October 22: Peter Doherty himself, ex-Libertines, ex-Baby Shambles, ex-fiancé of Kate Moss, a formerly uncontrollable troublemaker now mellowed, or almost.

A three-week internship

Dates

From Monday, October 2 to Friday, October 20, 2023: three weeks of intensive work, in the form of an internship.

Protagonists

  • eight highly motivated students from the 1st year of the Bac Pro Visual Communication Multi-Media program, on a 3-week internship under the SG Factory banner (an association hosted by Saint-Géraud high school, dedicated to graphic productions inspired by the world of contemporary music, particularly rock trends)...
  • three applied arts professors who are at least as motivated!

Objectives

  • Creation of an illustrated book inspired by the songs from the album «The fantasy life of poetry and crime»
  • Creation of the souvenir poster for the October 22 concert, screen-printed on the same day and in public, at the Coopérative de Mai

Process implemented

  • A pile of old issues of Paris-Match from the 1960s, made available to students to be literally torn apart (cut out, glued, ripped, shredded...).
  • Punk graphic design models, Dadaist collages, and other Do It Yourself experiments defining a raw, messy aesthetic universe, anything but sterile.
  • The prohibition of using computer tools, in favor of manual utensils: paintbrush, cutter, cardboard, kraft paper

The book and the poster

At the end of this internship, the students produced:

  • A book of 80 color pages, 45 rpm vinyl size (18 x 18 cm), digital printing, and perfect binding, limited edition of 30 copies
  • A 35 x 50 cm poster, 2-color screen print in an edition of 120, 3 variants to choose from: purple-black / orange-black / red-black

Meeting with Peter Doherty and Frédéric Lo

The long-awaited moment has finally arrived: a memorable meeting with Frédéric Lo and Peter Doherty (who came with his wife, child, and dog!), during which teachers and students presented the book and serigraph to the two artists. It was Sunday, October 22nd, around 5 PM, and it will be remembered for a long time...

Media returns:

  • An article in the daily newspaper La Montagne, Cantal edition
  • A TV report on France 3 Auvergne news
